2008 DallasBC League

And so it began……June 14th, Saturday, 2008

“It” refers to the badminton league initiated by the Dallas Badminton Club. The league hopes to introduce some much needed “oomph” as an alternative to routine practice against the same opponents. The round robin format removes the bias of a strong combination and ensures freshness in terms of opposition/partners by combining players of varying skills. The scoring system demands commitment to every point and not just the result, thereby increasing the match intensity and level of players over time.

Weekly League Headlines

1.         Noi Paisal/Andy Lovell Vs Irnov effendi/Andre Chionh [Group 2]

Winner:  Noi and Andy        Score:  21-18, 21-18

Reverchon, Mon June 16th, 2008

Class A division kicked off with this match. Within the first few points the intensity of a league match as opposed to regular play was obvious. Noi and Andy finished on the top with the score reading 21-18, 21-18. Both the teams started…Read More

on an aggressive note. Almost every “clear” was treated with a smash to try and take an early lead.

Irnov surprised the opposition with some interesting variety by mixing up smashes with cross court slices. Though it set them up well, they were unable to close out the points. Andy and Noi persevered defensively to weather the initial storm and were able to extend the rallies. This seemed to bother their opponents as they were running out of options. The prolonged rallies also seemed to tire out Andre as the match progressed thereby leading to critical mistakes. Also Andy Lovell displayed some tremendous quickness at the net and created enough pressure on the opposition to set up a victory.

2.         Bhaskar Balan/Harish Reddy Vs Kim Myeong/Carl Khor [Group 3]

            Winner: Bhaskar/Harish      Score: 18-21, 21-19, 21-19

But Harish and Bhaskar displayed nerves of steel to clinch the match by a whisker. The first game was close until 10 points each. Kim turned it on with some persistent smashes and Carl cut off the returns to secure an 18-12 lead. Just when the result for the first game seemed to be a forgone conclusion, Harish provided some consistent play from the backcourt for Bhaskar to control the game at the net and draw even at 18 points each. But Carl took the next 3 points to avoid any further damage and won the first game for his team.

What followed in game 2 was a see-saw battle with either team failing to hold on to the lead. Harish was under some heavy fire but he held his nerve at the crucial moments to win it 21-19.

The deciding game started off with both teams trying tricky serves to get cheap points and create some lead. Bhaskar went all out with his jump smashes to stay ahead in game 3. Though it was effective, the score was 19-20 with Carl serving to equalize. A short serve from Carl gave the much need reprieve for Bhaskar and Harish to seal the deal.

3.        Hue Tu/Thomas Philip Vs Nibu Paul/Hardjo Santoso [Group 1]

           Winner: Nibu Paul/Hardjo Santoso       Score:  21-19, 24-22

Reverchon, Mon June 16th, 2008

Before the match started there was a certain buzz since Hue Tu was stepping onto the floor. Also on the opposite side was Nibu who is gaining the reputation of a tricky player. The match started off slowly with both teams relying on…Read More

placement rather than speed. Nibu’s placement found its mark and Thomas struggled to read the game plan. Hue countered with a strategy of his own to level the game at 19 each. But the combination of Hue and Thomas lacked the spark to come through in critical situations.
Game 2 saw a better play from Thomas but the script was similar to the previous game. Too many mistakes cost Hue and Thomas the match.
